About Cindex

Cindex has been used by professional indexers to reliably create indexes for books, periodicals, serial publications, databases, and other documents for over 30 years. Cindex does not use AI.1

Created and developed in the mid-1980s by Indexing Research, and originally marketed as CINDEX, the software has been purchased and used by thousands of indexers and archivists around the world. Since its first release, CINDEX was continually enhanced and updated, based on suggestions and input from real indexers. Thanks to a project led by the original developer with contributions from a team of interested indexers, Cindex is now free, revitalized, and better than ever.

Cindex is available in Cindex for Mac, Cindex for Windows, and Cindex Publishers’ Edition (designed for installations on Windows-based networks with multiple users). Download Cindex here.

1 Cindex facilitates human indexers’ professional judgment by enabling them to create indexes with ease. In contrast, AI severely underindexes books, fails to provide an appropriate index structure, and hallucinates content.
